Environmental History in China

Landscapes, Fieldwork, and Research

I examine how historical ecology and human settlement shaped Chinese landscapes over time, with my field photography serving as documentary evidence alongside primary sources.

Method

Landscape, artifact, and text analyzed together

Archival inquiry and physical terrain inform each research project equally. I read historical texts against the ground they describe and the objects that survived it.

Fieldwork

Documentation as part of the research

My field photography across river valleys, urban edges, and montane ecosystems serves as direct documentary evidence. Each image is made alongside the sources that describe the same place.

Photographs and archival readings are kept in conversation, so terrain can test a claim as firmly as a document does.
